As early as the Tang Dynasty, Wang Wei (699-759) had already developed the fusion of painting and poetry. As a scholar, Wang's poetry depicted the atmosphere of a painting. As a painter, his painting portrayed the spirit of a poem. Through his inspiration, the School of "Hsieh-I" (Depicting Idea) emerged. Painting was elevated from a minute pursuit of detailed accuracy and advanced into one that captured the poetic spirit. Generations of literary giants became master painters, and unique scholar-painter tradition was born. Dr. Yeh followed this tradition-a tradition that was largely vanished through wars, modernization, and social upheavals.
In addition to his classical Chinese art training, Dr. Yeh is one of the very few Chinese artists who received full benefit of academic training in America. His work reflects a fusion of excellence from both the East and the West; it is both classical and modern.
Ning Yeh has been bringing the joy of chinese brush painting to western audiences for the past 35 years. Part of a 400 year family tradition, Dr Yeh's background, training, and personal history have crafted singularly unique perspective. This coupled with a fascination for the cultural exchanges between the societies of the east and west, have given Dr.Yeh a remarkable opportunity to use his artwork to act as a bridge between different cultures and people.
You can see the blending of two cultures throughout his artwork both in perspective and style. Looking at it you get a sense of an artist proud of his history and thankful for the path his life has taken.
His artwork captures the true spirit of each subject with spontaneity and an unbridled sense of joy. |
